Pubumesu Banana Fan
Known for her handcrafted fans made of dried buffalo leather, Canaan has been supporting Pubemesu for years. Each fan is handmade and painted in the traditional art form of Javanese Shadow Puppet Making. A mallet is used to tap special tools called Tatah, to punch the holes through the rawhide, while the buffalo horn handles are formed in a complicated process of sawing, heating, hand-molding and sanding until the desired effect is achieved.
The Pisang (Banana) fan is inspired by the hanging bananas sold by local fruit vendors. This piece is crafted from thinned cow hide, and its handles made from bull horns; this fan is handmade in the traditional art form of Javanese Shadow Puppet Making. Each hole punched individually, taking a true artisan to create a detailed piece.
